A Striking Mantel Clock by Luxor, in a Lapis Blue and Gilt Case

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Chalfont Clocks
Description

This mid century mantel clock is of exceptional quality, housed in a gilt and enamel case the blue enamelling flecked with gold imitate lapis lazuli. The eight day movement with platform escapement strikes on a bell, made audible through a beautifully pierced and engraved sound vent backed in yellow silk. The gilt roman dial has a pierced centre with renaissance style grotesques the brushed finish of which contrasts with the polished gilding behind. Dating from the 1960’s this clock is in exceptional near mint condition.

These clocks were retailed by some of the most highly regarded jewellers of the 20th century including Asprey’s in London and Tiffany’s in New York. Other identical examples have been found signed by Cartier who presumably bought the model from Luxor. This is a flamboyant example of mid 20th century design and craftsmanship at its best.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Luxor was a high-grade Swiss watchmaker based in Le Locle, renowned during the mid-twentieth century for producing luxury table, desk, and mantel clocks with precision mechanical movements.

High-end Swiss timepieces of this era frequently combine solid or gilt brass casings with ornamental stones such as lapis lazuli, malachite, or onyx, topped with protective glass crystals.

Authentic pieces feature the Luxor brand crest or typography printed on the dial, Swiss movement markings at the base of the dial, and substantial, finely finished metalwork.

Display the timepiece on a timber mantelpiece, dark walnut sideboard, or executive desk to create a focal point against neutral walls or rich wood panelling.

Wipe surfaces gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoid abrasive chemical polishes that strip original lacquer, and have the internal movement serviced by a professional horologist every five years.
