Kutani porcelain originated in the Ishikawa prefecture of Japan during the 17th century, named after the village of Kutani. Production was revived during the 19th century, becoming renowned worldwide for export ceramics during the Meiji era.

Kutani ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay fused at high temperatures to create a white porcelain base. Decoration involves hand-painted overglaze enamels, particularly iron-red enamel (aka-e) and gold leaf detailing.

Authentic pieces feature dense, hand-painted decoration, often including figurative panels, landscapes, or natural scenes. Look for character signatures painted on the base in red or gold and fine gilding over an iron-red palette.
