Exquisite Japanese Meiji (Ca. 1900) Iron Damascene 24k Gold Box by Fujii Yoshitoyo

1900 - 1920
Description

Superb Japanese Meiji (ca. 1900) iron damascene box made by Fujii Yoshitoyo of Kyoto in the komai style. The elegant oblong box is decorated on the top and sides with exquisitely detailed 24K gold inlay and with lovely engraving on the inside. The lid is decorated with a beautiful village scene with Mt Fuji in the background, while on the sides are dragons, phoenixes and flowers. Inside the lid and base are engraved with flowers. On the base is the Mt Fuji mark of Fujii Yoshitoyo. 6.5cm wide x 5cm deep x 3cm high, weight 200g.

Excellent condition with minor wear.

The Fujii company of Kyoto headed by Fujii Yoshitoyo (b 1868) exhibited domestically and internationally at the 1910 Japan-British Exposition, at the Tokyo Taisho Exhibition in 1914, and at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 in the 'Gold and Silversmith's work' category. Fujii was awarded several first-class medals and some of their finest pieces were purchased by the Imperial Household. Unlike Komai, who use the zogan (inlay) technique, Fujii mostly used an etching technique on his works.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
