Novelty snuff boxes became popular during the 18th and 19th centuries as social accessories for carrying powdered tobacco. Artisans carved them into various whimsical shapes, including animals, fish, and boots, reflecting the playful taste of the period.

Traditional snuff boxes were crafted from a wide range of materials depending on the maker and period, including various hardwoods such as boxwood and walnut, horn, bone, tortoiseshell, papier-mache, and precious metals like silver.

Authentication involves examining the wear patterns, tool marks, hinge construction, and material ageing. Genuine pieces often show natural patina, hand-carving inconsistencies, and period-appropriate fasteners rather than modern machine-cut screws or synthetic resins.

An antique box can be displayed as a focal point on a coffee table, bookshelf, or desk, often resting on a stack of art books or inside a glass display cabinet to add historical texture and a curated feel to a room.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent warping and cracking. Dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth is recommended, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or excessive moisture.
