The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, emphasising traditional craftsmanship, visible construction, and simple, honest forms inspired by medieval design.

Pieces from this era typically utilise solid native timbers such as pitch pine, oak, or ash, joined using traditional methods like dovetailing, mortise and tenon joints, and handcrafted brass or iron hardware.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-planed surfaces, tool marks, irregular grain patterns in solid timber, original hand-beaten metal fittings, and signs of age such as oxidation on hinges and screws.

Such pieces add warmth and texture to modern schemes when contrasted against minimalist walls, used as bedside storage, or paired with contemporary lighting to highlight the natural grain of the wood.

To preserve the finish, keep the wood away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally apply natural beeswax to nourish the timber.
