Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A crystal regulator is a style of mantle clock featuring four bevelled glass panels enclosed within a metallic brass or gilt frame, allowing visibility of the pendulum movement inside. Originating in France in the late nineteenth century, these timepieces were valued for their precision and decorative transparency.

These clocks are primarily constructed with heavy cast brass or gilded bronze frames, four bevelled glass or crystal plates, and an enamelled ceramic dial. The pendulum often features faux-mercury or twin vial temperature-compensating designs connected to a mechanical movement.

Authentic French examples typically feature maker stamps or trademarks on the rear plate of the movement, such as those from noted horologists like LEpee. They also exhibit thick bevelled glass panes, heavy brass construction, twin winding arbors on the dial, and serial numbers stamped on the backplate.

Place the timepiece centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or dedicated shelf to allow natural light to pass through the glass casing. Its metallic brass finish pairs well with minimalist or contemporary decor as a structured focal point.

Dust the external glass panels and brass frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that could tarnish protective lacquers. The mechanical movement should be serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years to ensure proper lubrication and accuracy.
