Description

Beautiful Japanese Meiji (late 19thC) black lacquer writing box (Suzuribako). The exterior of the overlapping lid (kabusebuta) is decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e with an imposing pine tree partially obscuring the crescent moon on a lustrous roiro-nuri ground, the design extending over the sides of the lid and the box, the canted corners and sides embellished with stylised scrolling pine. The inside of the lid is decorated with young pine saplings, while the interior of the box has two removable trays lacquered to match with pine saplings, with the baseboard (ita) contains a circular gilt water dropper (suiteki) engraved with pine and an ink-grinding stone (suzuri). Comes with its original wooden storage box. The box measures 26.5cm (10 3/8in) x 24.2cm (9½in) x 5.2cm (2in).
