Magnificent Japanese Meiji (Late 19thc) Black-lacquer Rounded Rectangular Letter Box (Fubako)

Description

Beautiful Japanese Meiji (late 19thC) black-gold lacquer rounded rectangular letter box (fubako), profusely decorated with pine, bamboo and prunus (sho-chiku-bai – the three ‘friends of winter' that flourish at the same time) foliage in gold and silver takamaki-e, the design extending over the sides of the box. Reserved on a roiro-nuri ground, the inside of the lid and box of rich mura-nashiji, both sides of the box with silvered-metal fittings in the form of a plum blossom attached with a loose ring handle incorporating the tasselled, purple silk cord. Comes with original wood storage box. Measures 24.6cm x 9.5cm x 5.2cm.

Lovely original condition. A masterful example of Japanese lacquerwork.
