Description

Attractive Japanese Meiji or Taisho (early 20thC) black & gold lacquer box with matching tray decorated with chrysanthemums. The exterior of the inrobuta (flush-fitting lid) with silver rims is decorated in gold hiramaki-e with a sprig of leafy large chrysanthemums on a lustrous roiro-nuri ground, the design extending over one corner of the lid and one side of the box. The inside of the lid and box and the base is decorated with stylised butterflies on a roiro ground, the tray with a continuation of the same design with a sprig of chrysanthemums trailing across the surface from the left corner.

Comes with original wood tomobako storage box inscribed on the lid Kiku maki-e makitabako bako (Chrysanthemum maki-e cigarete box) with a seal Shissendo, inside the lid signed Heian Shissendo with a seal Shissendo with another seal Koda and saku (made by Koda). The box measures 14.2cm x 11.2cm x 5.5cm; the tray 24.5cm x 17.3cm x 2.3cm.
