Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This early 18th-century Continental Baroque oak cabinet displays a dark brown finish with contrasting lighter fruitwood inlay. The piece has a two-door configuration featuring carved fan lunettes, geometric inlay, strapwork panels, and a carved frieze along the top. Additional carved decoration extends down the pilasters and vertical strips flanking the doors, complemented by central round turned wooden knobs on each door face and a carved guilloche moulding running up the central stile. The cabinet stands on a stepped plinth base and is capped with a moulded cornice. The entire structure measures 60 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Such a compact wall-hanging or table-top cabinet suits a gentleman's library, a study, or a living room. It provides enclosed tabletop storage for small collectibles, documents, or personal items while serving as a decorative focal point against a panelled wall or bookcase. The dark wood tones integrate easily into traditional interiors alongside period desks and seating.

Continental oak cabinets from the early 18th century typically feature architectural elements such as carved arches, raised boss details, strapwork, and geometric inlay, reflecting regional Baroque design traditions across Northern Europe.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from solid oak, often incorporating contrasting fruitwood or timber inlays, assembled using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joinery with hand-planed panel backs.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-tooling, such as adze or pit-saw marks on secondary surfaces, irregular peg placements, natural timber shrinkage around panels, and original wrought iron or steel hardware.

A carved oak cabinet serves as a textural focal point when set against neutral plaster or limewashed walls, creating contrast alongside modern minimalist seating, stone floorings, or contemporary art.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the oak and maintain the protective patina, avoiding liquid sprays or chemical cleaners.
