Beautiful Japanese Meiji (19thc) Lacquered Three-tier Box and Cover

19th century
Description

Superb Japanese Meiji (19thC) lacquered three-tier box with lovely grained wood. The cover is decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e with probably the poet-priest Saigyo Hoshi resting on the bottom right corner, leaning back and admiring the crescent moon applied in silver high relief, the sides of each tier similarly lacquered in gold hiramaki-e with a continuous and different design of pine, stylised birds, cherry blossoms adrift on a meandering stream. Unsigned. 8.2cm x 22.2cm x 15cm (3¼in x 8¾in x 5 7/8in).

The lid is warped but otherwise the box is in perfect condition.
