Ships clocks, or bulkhead clocks, were traditionally used on naval and merchant vessels for telling time and regulating the crews watches, often striking the ships bells to mark the passage of time.

Authentic marine clocks typically feature heavy cast brass or bronze cases designed to withstand corrosive maritime environments, fitted with thick bevelled glass and robust mechanical movements.

Authenticity is indicated by heavy, patinated brass housings, securely screwed bezel lids, makers marks or broad arrow government stamps on the dial or movement, and quality mechanical escapements.

A brass bulkhead clock serves as a striking focal point when mounted on a painted timber wall in a study, hallway, or kitchen, contrasting well with both traditional and contemporary schemes.

The brass case should be dusted gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip the natural historical patina. Mechanical movements should be serviced professionally every few years.
