Carriage clocks originated in France during the 19th century as portable timepieces designed for travellers, military officers, and nobility on the move.

These clocks typically feature a heavy brass or gilded bronze frame fitted with bevelled glass panels to allow visibility of the intricate mechanical movement inside.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut brass gears, numbered mechanical movements, escape mechanisms visible through glass panels, and signs of age such as gentle oxidisation on the metal surface.

Placing a metallic clock on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table introduces a traditional focal point that contrasts effectively with contemporary minimalist furniture.

Maintain the clock by keeping it out of direct sunlight and high humidity, winding it carefully using the correct key, and having it professionally serviced every few years to ensure the movement remains clean.
