French Striking Victorian Carriage Clock, Lovely

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into stock this lovely Victorian eight-day carriage clock, complete with strike function.

The beautifully proportioned brass case is in fantastic condition, complemented by five original bevelled glasses. The clock also retains its original vanity plate to the underside of the base, adding an extra touch of authenticity.

The rack-striking movement incorporates a lever platform escapement and has just undergone a full service and clean, benefiting from my three-year guarantee. The platform escape wheel has a dynamic action, while the clock strikes the full hours on a spiral gong, with a single strike at each half hour.

Original spade hands complement the exquisite masked dial, which is a particularly striking feature of this beautiful timepiece.

This is a stunning, fully restored Victorian carriage clock, offered in exceptional working and cosmetic condition. At Clockwise, I do not believe in short guarantees or part restorations sometimes offered elsewhere — this clock has been properly restored and is ready for its new forever home.

Clockwise specialises in fine longcase and bracket clocks and has built an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service, with clients ranging from the worlds of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy, as well as a loyal clientele of traditional clock enthusiasts.

Please note: the stated height measurement of 17.5cm is taken to the top of the upturned carrying handle.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First developed in France during the early 19th century by Abraham-Louis Breguet, carriage clocks were designed for travellers requiring a reliable timepiece on journeys. They featured sturdy brass cases, glass panels to view the movement, and carrying handles, quickly becoming popular status symbols across Europe.

Traditional carriage clocks feature solid brass cases, often gilded or lacquered, fitted with bevelled glass panels on the sides, back, and top. Dials are typically constructed from white enamel or gilt metal masks surrounding an enamel chapter ring, housing a mechanical steel and brass movement.

Authentic pieces generally feature heavy brass construction with precision bevelled glass, a platform escapement visible through a top window, and French movement maker marks stamped on the back plate. The presence of blued steel hands and hand-painted enamel dials also indicates traditional manufacture.

A carriage clock serves as a sophisticated accent piece when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or stacked atop books on a curated bookshelf. The warm metallic brass tones pair effectively alongside modern ceramics, contemporary framed art, or traditional dark wood furniture.

Dust the brass case regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and clean glass panels with a lightly dampened swab, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive polishes that strip protective lacquers. The mechanical movement requires professional horological servicing and oiling every five to seven years to ensure reliable operation.
