Geo III Mahogany Pad Top Bracket Clock

18th century
Sold 30 September 2025 · Cross Antiques
This “Geo III Mahogany Pad Top Bracket Clock” found a buyer.

It was listed by Cross Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A lovely original bracket clock by E C Anderson of Newington, London. He is listed as working there from 1820 to 1830.

The case is in nicely figured mahogany with an oval of flame mahogany inlaid below the dial. The case has fluted quarter columns with brass capitals and brass inlay. To the top is a raised mahogany pad with bras moulded edge and a nice gilt brass pinaple finial. It stands on its original brass ball feet and to the sides are brass fish scale frets and lions head ring handles.

The good quality twin fusee movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a smart painted dial with the makers name.

The clock is in nice original condition but the front panel of the case has bowed slightly causing vertical cracks either side, the LH side being more noticable than the RH side (see pictures). There is also a small piece of moulding missing above the RH quarter column.

The movement is in good working order and keeping good time.

Dispite the defects listed it still presents as a handsom clock in good working order at half the normal price.

The maximum dimensions are:

44cm (17,5") high, excl finial (plus 7cm)

32cm (12.5") wide

17cm (6.75") deep

A Georgian bracket clock is a portable mechanical timekeeper produced during the Georgian era, traditionally designed to sit on a bracket, shelf, or table.

They typically feature a solid timber frame, often mahogany or ebonised wood, housing a brass fusee movement, a painted or engraved dial, and cast brass mounts.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-engraved backplate, the quality of the timber grain, the period-correct brass hardware, and the construction methods of the mechanical movement.

An antique bracket clock serves as a focal point when placed on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookcase, contrasting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist decor.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and moisture, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
