This George IV antique sterling silver fish slice dates from the period around 1800 and exhibits a Georgian style with a polished silver finish. The rectangular blade includes a hand-pierced openwork border, finely engraved intertwined fish motifs across the surface, and an angled bolster connecting to a plain fiddle pattern handle. Hallmarks are stamped near the neck of the handle, and the polished metal shows light surface reflections on its smooth curved surfaces. Measuring 29.6 cm in length, this utilitarian flatware piece is designed for serving fish dishes during formal meals. It suits placement on a dining room sideboard top or within a display cabinet, and functions practically for everyday table service or formal entertaining in a contemporary home.

Introduced during the eighteenth century, the silver fish slice was designed specifically for serving whole fish at formal dining tables without breaking the delicate flesh or absorbing flavours, leading to specialised piercing and engraving techniques.

Georgian fish slices were predominantly crafted from sterling silver (925 purity) to prevent corrosion from fish acids, featuring hand-pierced and engraved blades attached to solid or filled silver handles.

Authentic pieces feature clear struck hallmarks including the Hibernia mark for Dublin, the crowned harp, a date letter, a purity mark, and a registered silversmith makers mark.

Antique silver servers are frequently displayed inside glazed cabinet showcases, mounted in shadow boxes as wall art, or styled on sideboards alongside period dining accessories.

Clean silver using a gentle silver foam or non-abrasive polish with soft cotton cloths, avoiding automated dishwashers and harsh chemicals that cause excessive oxidisation or metal wear.
