Georgian Sterling Silver Soup Ladle, Old English Pattern, London 1800

Description

This impressive Georgian sterling silver soup ladle was hallmarked at the London Assay Office in 1800. The maker’s mark IB corresponds to one of several highly respected London silversmiths working under this mark at the turn of the 19th century: James Beattie, John Boyer or Joseph Barnard, all known for producing high-quality silver during the late Georgian period.

The ladle is crafted in the classic Old English pattern, characterised by a long, elegant tapering handle that broadens gently towards a rounded terminal. The bowl is deep and circular with generous proportions, making it suitable for serving soup, broth or punch.

The handle is engraved with a finely executed armorial crest depicting a bird of prey attacking a serpent, a striking example of Georgian heraldic engraving. Such crests were typically engraved for the commissioning family and indicate the ladle was originally made for a household of some standing. The design closely relates to the crest associated with the Backhouse family recorded in Fairbairn’s Book of Crests.

The ladle retains a strong and balanced presence typical of quality Georgian table silver, with elegant proportions and excellent craftsmanship.
