A matched pair of Victorian mahogany cylindrical bedside cabinets in an unusual architectural form with richly figured reddish brown wood veneers and inset round rouge marble tops. Each cabinet has deeply fluted and faceted sides, a cupboard door with a small dark round handle, and stands on a stepped octagonal plinth base. The marble tops are framed by substantial rounded moulded edges, and the exterior shows the usual signs of age and use, including minor veneer losses and nibbles. Measuring 79 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 43 cm deep with a 39 cm diameter cylindrical body, these cabinets offer a shelved interior for practical storage. They work well in a traditional bedroom as bedside tables or in a living room as occasional lamp tables.

Originally designed during the 19th century, cylindrical pot cupboards were standalone bedroom storage pieces created to discreetly house chamber pots before modern indoor plumbing became widespread. Their column shape and flush doors allowed them to fit neatly alongside traditional high-framed beds.

These cabinets were typically built using high-grade hardwoods such as flame mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring solid timber or fine veneers over oak frames. Inset tops were commonly carved from imported French or Italian marbles, including rouge marble, white Carrara, or grey Bardiglio.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers or door frame construction, hand-turned timber knobs or small brass latches, and natural age-related patination on the mahogany. The marble tops often show smooth, hand-finished underside bevels and minor historical surface wear.

In modern interiors, these pieces function effectively as symmetrical nightstands framing an upholstered or timber bedstead. Their architectural column shape also allows them to serve as sculptural plant pedestals or side tables flanking a living room sofa.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to preserve the timber finish. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner or damp cloth, ensuring acidic liquids are wiped away immediately to prevent etching.
