This Japanese Meiji period shodana from around 1880 is a tabletop display cabinet constructed from mixed woods with intricate geometric yosegi parquetry and marquetry inlay. The piece displays a warm brown natural timber colour palette with honey, chestnut and dark brown tones, finished with small turned wooden knobs on the drawers. The front incorporates sliding doors with woven-pattern panels, staggered open shelving in the centre, and multiple small storage drawers below. Measuring 51 cm high, 40.5 cm wide and 18 cm deep, the cabinet stands on a simple rectangular base with upturned eaves at the top corners. It provides versatile storage and display surfaces suitable for a sideboard top or desk in a living room, study or hallway today.

A Shodana is a traditional Japanese display cabinet designed with open asymmetrical shelving, small drawers, and enclosed cupboards. During the Meiji period (18681912), cabinetmakers frequently adorned these functional storage pieces with complex Yosegi-zaiku geometric parquetry targeted at both domestic use and Western export markets.

Yosegi-zaiku relies on gluing together multi-coloured timber rodssuch as spindle wood, cedar, keyaki, and walnutinto complex geometric block patterns. Micro-thin veneers are then shaved from these patterned blocks and applied to the wooden frame and drawer fronts of the cabinet.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery, natural timber oxidation, and fine structural wood shrinkage around joints. Look for original turned timber handles, thin hand-planed parquetry veneers, and traditional frame construction rather than modern synthetic finishes or machine fasteners.

Position the cabinet on a low console table or sideboard to serve as a focal point. The open asymmetrical shelving allows for the display of small ceramics, bronze objects, or books, while the geometric wood tones pair well with neutral schemes.

Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent the thin parquetry veneers from lifting or warping. Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to nourish the underlying timber.
