Historical Context
Although often referred to today as a "smoke dome", the term is largely modern.

They were never designed to be hung from a ceiling and were primarily used for covering and protecting food, fruit, cheese and other perishables from flies, while helping to keep them fresh. They could also be used to retain warmth and aromas at the dining table, and occasionally to trap smoke from herbs or incense for presentation purposes. More decorative examples were sometimes employed as dressing-table covers for valuable or delicate items.

The applied ring often leads people to assume they were intended as hanging objects, but in most cases it simply allowed the dome to be lifted easily without touching the body. It could also be used to hang the cover on a wall hook when not in use and made carrying the dome safer and more convenient.
