Pair of Sheraton Revival Painted Satinwood Demi-lune Cabinets

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely detailed pair of Sheraton Revival demi-lune cabinets, crafted in satinwood and enriched throughout with hand-painted neoclassical ornament.

Each cabinet has a semi-circular top painted with floral sprays and a central shell motif. The curved frieze incorporates a working drawer at the top, while the matching sections at either side are faux drawer fronts. These open as cupboard doors to reveal further shelved storage.

The cabinet fronts are centred by painted oval reserves depicting classical urns, flanked by panels of classical figures. Floral garlands, ribbons, swags and finely painted borders complete the decoration, while the warm satinwood provides an elegant golden ground.

Raised on square tapering legs, the cabinets offer useful storage within a graceful demi-lune form. They would work well as side cabinets or console pieces.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Sheraton Revival demi-lune cabinets dates from 1910 and takes the form of semi-circular storage pieces in golden brown satinwood with multi-coloured hand-painted neoclassical ornament. Each piece stands 91 cm high, 152 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, featuring a curved frieze with a working top drawer alongside faux drawer fronts and cupboard doors. The woodwork is decorated with central oval reserves depicting classical urns, flanked by panels of classical figures, floral garlands, and tapering square feet. These cabinets serve well in a home today as side cabinets or console pieces in a living room, hallway, or dining room. The surface displays visible inlaid wood borders, painted floral swags, and round brass mounts across the frieze, all set against a warm golden satinwood ground with visible grain patterns.

FAQs

Sheraton Revival emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, drawing inspiration from Thomas Sheratons 18th-century neoclassical designs. These pieces feature light-coloured woods like satinwood, characteristically adorned with hand-painted neoclassical motifs, urns, garlanding, and slim tapered feet.

Demi-lune cabinets from this period are predominantly framed in solid hardwoods and veneered with West Indian or East Indian satinwood. Painted decorations were applied using oil-based pigments, frequently accompanied by crossbanded timber borders and cast brass handles or keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit fine secondary timbers such as oak or mahogany in drawer linings and back panels. Hand-painted decorative details often show light age-related craquelure, while hand-cut dovetail joints and original lock mechanisms confirm late Victorian or Edwardian period construction.

A symmetrical pair works effectively positioned flanking a central doorway, fireplace, or large mirror in a hallway or formal dining space. Placing minimalist contemporary table lamps or monochrome ceramics on top creates a balanced contrast between antique detail and modern interior lines.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, taking care not to rub painted sections. Avoid chemical spray cleaners or water, and apply a light coat of clear beeswax once or twice a year to protect the underlying timber varnish.
