Antique Oak Livery Cupboard - Georgian Mid 18th C.

18th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A Georgian mid-18th-century joined oak livery cupboard with a moulded cornice above two fielded cupboard doors with engraved brass H-shaped hinges enclosing an interior with original interior hanging pegs. Below this the base has three further fielded panels with two drawers, both with brass swan neck handles, and is finished on stile feet.

Overall condition is very good with age-related wear and tear. Additionally, we have noted that the rear planks on the top section have been replaced, probably due to damage on the original boards. Looking at their wear and age, this was probably done decades, if not centuries ago.

Date of Manufacture

M Cross Antiques has dated this Georgian Oak Livery Cupboard to the Georgian era.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints across the frame: traditional regional cabinetmaking.
Raised and fielded panel profiles: typical Georgian joinery work.
Hand-turned wooden hanging pegs inside the upper section: original utilitarian fitting.
Uneven hand-worked timber on the inner faces: pre-industrial timber preparation.
Dark handling patina around the locks and pulls: steady domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This mid-18th-century Georgian livery cupboard is an English country house piece made from joined oak with a dark brown finish. The upper section has a moulded cornice and two cupboard doors with raised fielded panels, secured by brass H-shaped hinges and keyhole escutcheons. The lower base section contains three additional fielded panels above two drawers fitted with brass swan-neck handles, all supported on stile feet. The timber displays natural age-related wear and tear across its surfaces. Overall dimensions measure 179 cm high, 151 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. This substantial storage furniture suits placement in a traditional hallway, dining room, or living space as a wardrobe or linen press.

FAQs

Originating in the medieval period and continuing through the 18th century, a livery cupboard was historically used to store food, linens, or clothing intended for distribution to household members and servants.

Georgian livery cupboards were constructed primarily from solid English oak, utilizing hand-joined mortise and tenon timber framing, fielded door panels, and hand-cast brass hardware such as H-hinges and drop handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, peg construction, and natural oxidisation on untouched backboards, interior drawer linings, and original brass fittings.

A dark oak press cupboard serves as a functional focal point in a hallway, dining room, or primary bedroom, pairing effectively with neutral wall finishes and minimalist contemporary lighting.

Maintain the timber finish by placing the item away from direct heat sources and applying a thin coat of clear beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth.
