This late nineteenth-century Victorian wall clock is a functional timepiece from 1880, belonging to the genre of fusee dial clocks suited for a gentleman's library or a narrow wall space. The piece consists of a traditional solid mahogany pegged case with a warm brown circular wooden surround, a polished brass bezel enclosing a glass face, and a cream painted dial marked with black Roman numerals and retailer text reading John Lilley & Son Ltd, London & North Shields. Visible details include a heavy stepped wooden housing behind the dial, black spade and pointer hands, and subtle age-related surface wear to the enamel dial face. Measuring 38 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 16 cm deep, this clock mounts securely to vertical interior surfaces in studies, hallways, or living areas to provide both timekeeping utility and period character.

A fusee dial clock is an English mechanical wall timepiece featuring a cone-shaped pulley system designed to maintain constant torque as the mainspring unwinds, ensuring accurate timekeeping.

These timepieces typically feature turned mahogany or oak surrounds, cast brass bezels, heavy brass mechanical movements, and painted sheet iron or wooden dials.

Authentic period examples feature hand-painted dials, pegged joinery on the back box, heavy cast brass bezels with glass covers, and a tapered fusee cone driven by a chain or gut line.

A dial clock serves as an architectural focal point when positioned in a hallway, home office, or gallery wall, pairing effectively with both traditional panelling and modern neutral backgrounds.

Keep the movement operating by winding it weekly using the correct size key, ensure the clock is hung plumb on a sturdy wall fixing, and arrange professional horological servicing every five to seven years.
