FAQs

A plank coffer, often referred to as a six-plank chest, is an early form of storage furniture made from simple solid timber boards joined together. These pieces were widely produced in England throughout the medieval and Jacobean periods for storing linens, valuables, and household items.

Early coffers were primarily constructed from solid native oak planks secured with hand-cut wooden dowels or iron nails. They frequently feature hand-forged iron hinges, keyhole escutcheons, and decorative edge carving such as notch or chip motifs.

Authentic period coffers typically exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, V-cut shaped end boards that form the feet, and hand-wrought iron hardware. The patina will show natural wear, historical surface marks, and evidence of hand-carved decorative detailing along the edges.

A solid oak coffer functions effectively as a hallway bench, a low side table, or storage at the foot of a bed. Its deep wood tones and historical texture provide a strong visual accent in both traditional country homes and contemporary spaces.

Preserve the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting, and avoid applying water directly to raw iron fittings.
