This pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases belongs to the Meiji period and dates to 1920. Each piece has a hexagonal body with gilded rims, finished in gold and cream enamel with intricate brocade patterns and heavy gold enamel detailing across the upper shoulders. Six decorated panels display figural scenes, mountain landscapes, birds and flowers, complemented by traditional Japanese architecture and pine trees rendered in multiple colours including black, red, green and brown. The vessels measure 18 cm high, 10 cm wide and 10 cm deep. Positioned on a mantelpiece, these decorative vases work well as a matched pair in a traditional or eclectic interior. They suit a living room shelf, a dining room side cabinet or a hallway console table as accent pieces.

Satsuma pottery originates from Kyushu, Japan, initially produced during the late sixteenth century and expanded widely during the Meiji period for international export.

These pieces are crafted from yellowish earthenware featuring a fine crackle glaze, decorated with detailed overglaze enamels and extensive gilded embellishments.

Authentic examples typically display fine micro-crackling in the glaze, delicate gilding, complex hand-painted figures, and character marks or seals on the base.

Positioning a pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a display cabinet adds warm metallic tones and visual interest to contemporary room schemes.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or friction that could wear away the gold leaf and overglaze pigments.
