Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Fine craquelure across the cream ground: natural ageing of the lacquer.
Arabic chapter ring and pierced hands: dial styling popular between the wars.
Cast and gilded gadrooned plinth: ornamental casework of the 1930s.
Steel coiled gong mounted on an iron block: standard interwar chiming setup.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This cream chinoiserie mantel clock originates from 1930 and follows an English country house style. The arched case is made of lacquered wood with a cream ground finish, detailed with raised oriental style decoration depicting pagoda landscapes, flowering branches, and mountainous terrain in brown, red, and gold tones. A polished steel dial sits behind a circular glass front within a decorative brass bezel, marked with black Arabic numerals and two winding holes. The structure rests on a rectangular plinth base featuring ornate beaded brass mouldings and small bun feet, accented by a decorative floral motif at the top arch. The physical dimensions measure 24.5 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this timepiece sits on a mantelpiece in a living room, study, or hallway as a decorative and functional focal point.

Chinoiserie mantel clocks are decorative timepieces finished in a European style that mimics East Asian artistic motifs, featuring painted scenes, pagodas, and lacquered surfaces.

These clocks generally feature wooden cases coated in lacquer or enamel paint, detailed with hand-applied pigments, gilding, glass covers, and brass bezels or feet.

Authentic period examples often exhibit subtle surface craquelure, slight variations in hand-painted detail, key-wound mechanical movements, and natural wear around the winding holes and base.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf, pairing it with neutral stoneware, brass candlesticks, or minimalist artwork to anchor the room.

Dust the surface using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid polishes or abrasive cleaners, keep away from direct heat sources, and have the mechanical movement professionally oiled.
