Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late 17th century West Country court cupboard follows the Jacobean style, constructed from solid dark brown oak with a rich patinated finish. The robust piece incorporates an upper section of two small cupboards flanking central floral relief panels and detailed sea creature carvings, beneath a heavily carved top frieze bearing the initials W.W.M alongside a later graffitied date of 1790 AD. Turned pendant drops accent the frieze and upper corners. Below are two drawers fitted with small bronze ring handles, sitting above a pair of large lower panelled doors that open to reveal an interior shelf. Moulded framing, recessed panels, and carved side motifs complete the facade. Measuring 174 cm high, 159 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, this traditional storage item provides substantial display and enclosed storage capacity for an English country house interior, functioning well in a dining room, hallway, or living space to house tableware, linens, or books.

FAQs

Originating in the 16th and 17th centuries, court cupboards were tier-constructed storage units used in wealthy households to display valuable silver and ceramics on top while housing linens and foodstuffs in the enclosed cupboards below.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with hand-carved wooden pegs, often featuring relief-carved panels, turned supports, and hand-forged iron hardware.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular pegged construction, age-related shrinkage along wood grain lines, dark patinated oak surfaces, and regional carving motifs specific to areas like the West Country.

A large oak cupboard serves as a focal piece in a dining room or wide hallway, providing functional storage while contrasting against modern neutral walls and clean-lined contemporary furnishings.

Maintain the wood by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources or rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting.
