Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 17th century Jacobean oak food court cupboard in dark brown exhibits a rich antique patina. The upper section features a plank top above two doors with turned vertical spindles and hanging drop finials, complemented by carved moulding and punch work decoration. Below sits a two-door cabinet with fielded panels, enclosing a single shelved storage area secured by a working non-original lock and key with a beige tassel hanging from the hardware. The solid timber construction displays expected surface wear and marks consistent with age. Measuring 131 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 54.5 cm deep, this compact piece functions as practical storage in a hallway, dining room, or living space. The upper ventilated compartment accommodates pantry items or dinnerware, while the lower shelved interior organises household goods. The traditional English country house style integrates smoothly into period properties and modern interiors alike.

FAQs

A 17th-century food court cupboard, also known as a livery or dole cupboard, is a timber storage cabinet designed with ventilated sections to store bread and provisions prior to modern refrigeration.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native oak, featuring peg-jointed mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned spindles, and hand-planed timber panels.

Authentic pieces display hand-hewn timber marks, irregular peg construction, historical oxidisation around iron hardware, and distinct wear patterns consistent with centuries of use.

Position the piece as a focal point in a dining room, hallway, or kitchen, pairing its dark wood texture with neutral plaster walls and minimalist contemporary ceramics.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the patination, keeping the item away from direct heat sources.
