Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Arabic numerals with inner 24-hour track: commercial dial layout from the 1930s.
Stepped geometric drop handles: distinct Art Deco metal fittings.
Chromed shield-shaped pendulum bob: interwar industrial plating.
Raised lacquerwork over crazed ground: popular twentieth-century revival decoration.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

This 1930 Chinoiserie Revival longcase clock is constructed from dark red lacquered wood, brass, and gilt materials. The hood incorporates a pagoda dome topped with a central finial and flanked by three smaller urn-shaped finials, alongside faux fluted columns, floral decorations, and four dragons framing the brass dial. The dial displays black numbers and hands. The long door features raised gilded Oriental female figures, landscape scenes, and a mountain motif near the lower section, complemented by moulded detailing, floral decoration on the plinth, and original brass handles. Minor wear appears on the case. Measuring 236 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, this tall timepiece suits placement in a gentleman's library or hallway as a striking decorative focal point.

Chinoiserie longcase clocks feature European horological mechanisms housed within timber cases decorated with Western interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions, predominantly utilising raised lacquerwork, gilded figures, pagoda motifs, and stylized natural landscapes.

Clocks from this period generally employ an oak, pine, or mahogany carcass covered in multiple coats of paint or lacquer, decorated with hand-applied gilding and gesso relief work, and fitted with brass mechanical dials and movements.

Identification involves inspecting the movement for period-appropriate maker marks and construction, checking the painted surface for genuine age-related craquelure, and verifying that the brass dial and spandrels exhibit historic manufacturing techniques rather than modern casting.

A longcase clock can be placed as a singular focal feature in a hallway or living space, framed by neutral architectural background finishes or paired with understated contemporary furniture to accentuate its decorative gilt detail.

Care requires gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, solvent cleaners, or wax polishes that can degrade the delicate lacquer surface and gilt details, alongside maintaining a stable ambient humidity for the wooden case and brass movement.
