A monteith or bonnet glass is a historical form of glassware typically featuring a scalloped or fluted bowl, raised on a stem and foot, used in the 18th century for serving desserts, custards, or sweetmeats.

These pieces were typically hand-blown using lead metal or soda glass, often featuring optical moulding, trailed glass details, and pontil marks on the underside from the manufacturing process.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic signs of age such as a rough snapped pontil mark, tiny air bubbles within the glass matrix, uneven wall thickness, and natural surface wear consistent with historical handling.

Historic glass items can be displayed singularly on mantelpieces, grouped in illuminated cabinets, or utilised functionally to hold small botanical stems or floating candles to add historical texture to modern schemes.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh chemicals to protect the delicate surface and any applied trails.
