Pilkingtons Royal Lancastrian 2887 Vase

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful Pilkingtons Royal Lancastrian 'elephants foot' shape vase dating from the early 20th century with a beautiful blue and teal glaze. It has an impressed Pilkingtons mark to the base, and the number 2887. A really lovely piece of vintage art pottery.

Condition: The vase has a couple of small chips - one on the foot, one on the body - and a flaw in the glaze on the neck. There is also a pinprick flaw on the body. I have tried to show these in the photos. The vase has crazing to the glaze, and one of the crazing lines has a slight step in it when you run your fingernail over it, and I think may have actually developed into a hairline crack as the vase doesn’t sound quite right when you tap it, and I can’t see anything else that could be causing this. I can’t however see inside the vase to see if it has transferred all the way through to the inside. Nethertheless this is a beautiful vase, and these flaws are reflected in the price.

This Pilkingtons Royal Lancastrian earthenware vase dates from 1910 and belongs to the Art Deco period. The ceramic body features an elephants foot shape with a bulbous lower section and a short cylindrical neck, coated in a mottled cobalt blue glaze that shades into deep teal near the foot and exhibits surface crazing. Visible wear and imperfections include small chips on the foot and body, a glaze flaw on the neck, a pinprick flaw on the body, and a suspect crazing line with a slight step that may be a hairline crack. The piece measures 21 cm high by 19 cm wide by 19 cm deep. In a modern home, this vase makes an ideal decorative accent on a mantelpiece. It also serves as a striking display vessel on a living room bookshelf, a hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard. The rich blue colourway complements various interior colour schemes, while the classic art pottery silhouette integrates easily into traditional and contemporary display arrangements alike.

Pilkingtons Royal Lancastrian was a British pottery manufacturer producing art ceramics and decorative tiles in Lancashire between 1892 and 1957. The pottery gained recognition for its technical glaze formulations, lustreware, and collaborations with prominent Arts and Crafts designers.

Royal Lancastrian pieces were formed from refined earthenware clay and dipped in engineered glazes. The manufacturer was noted for developing crystalline, opalescent, mottled, and lapis lazuli glaze finishes through controlled high-temperature firing.

Authentic items typically feature impressed factory marks on the unglazed base, such as the P&N monogram, a Tudor rose, or the full Royal Lancastrian stamp. Numerical shape codes, such as 2887, and individual artist initials were also regularly impressed into the clay.

A saturated blue glazed vase functions as an accent piece when displayed on a fireplace mantel, side table, or open bookshelf. Positioning the ceramic vessel against light neutral backdrops or alongside natural timber allows the tones of the glaze to stand out.

Dust the surface periodically using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking the object in water or applying abrasive cleaning solutions, as moisture can seep into fine surface crazing.
