Georgian baluster glasses are characterised by heavy lead content, thick walled vessels, and prominent knopped or baluster stems, which developed following the introduction of lead crystal by George Ravenscroft in the late 17th century.

These pieces were typically hand-blown using lead metal glass, which provided a heavier weight, high refractive index, and a clear, resonant quality compared to contemporary continental potash glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit genuine wear marks on the base known as pontil scars, uneven thickness from hand-blowing, tiny entrapped air bubbles within the metal, and a characteristic greyish or dark tone to the lead glass under ultraviolet light.

Displaying antique stemware within glass-fronted cabinets or on open shelving allows light to pass through the clear lead crystal, introducing historic texture and subtle reflectivity into modern rooms.

Historic glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and never placed in a dishwasher to protect the fragile surface and prevent sickness in the glass.
