This nineteenth-century Italian faience urn belongs to the Renaissance Revival style, produced in earthenware with a tin glaze and metallic lustre finish. The body displays a terracotta and gold colour palette, enhanced by hand-painted stylized foliage, twin scroll handles, lustre roundels, a pedestal foot, and Renaissance scrollwork. The surface is completely covered in glossy painted designs, featuring rows of raised red roundels framed by yellow ochre, scrolling foliate patterns against white grounds, and orange-red glazed handles with curled terminals that arch outwards from the rim to the shoulder. A distinct stepped pedestal base supports the swelling bowl, while horizontal raised mouldings encircle the upper and middle sections. Measuring 30 cm high, 24 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, this large decorative vessel works well placed atop a sideboard or large cabinet in a formal living room or dining area to add historical character to an interior.

FAQs

Italian faience, often referred to alongside maiolica, is a form of tin-glazed earthenware known for its opaque white surface and hand-painted decoration. The style experienced a major revival during the nineteenth century, drawing heavily from Italian Renaissance artistic motifs.

Metallic lustre is achieved by applying metallic salts, such as copper or silver, onto a previously glazed ceramic piece. The object is then subjected to a lower-temperature reduction firing in the kiln, leaving a thin, iridescent metallic film on the surface.

Authentic Cantagalli pieces generally feature the factory mark on the base, typically depicted as a singing cockerel or rooster. Additionally, original pieces exhibit distinct tin-glaze texture, precise hand painting, and traditional Florentine Renaissance forms.

A vibrant decorative urn functions as a focal accent when placed on a neutral sideboard, entryway console, or mantlepiece. Combining historic ceramics with contemporary backdrops highlights the handcrafted details and colour palette.

Lustre glazes require delicate maintenance to avoid removing the thin surface layer. Dusting with a soft, dry lint-free cloth is recommended, avoiding chemical polishes, abrasive pads, or prolonged water immersion.
