Description

This is a rare Georgian, Lynn-moulded, English, double series opaque twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765. It is the second time this glass has passed through our hands.

The glass is in reasonable condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5.3 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is moulded with a graduated series of seven Lynn rings; the appellation arising from the belief that these distinctive glasses were blown in King's Lynn, Norfolk. They have also been called Norfolk glasses in the past. The bowl sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two pairs of thin enamel cords twisted around a central corkscrew. The stem ends in a terraced foot which measures 7.1 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.4 cm (5.7 inches) in height. The underside rim of the foot is chipped in a number of places although most do not impact on the outside edge and the glass still presents well. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an old collector's sticker on the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Provenance: With us in 2015, then in The Graham Slater Collection.

An 18th-century drinking vessel characterised by a stem containing white or coloured enamel threads enclosed within clear glass, highly prized by collectors of historical British glassware.

These pieces were hand-blown using lead glass, with intricate internal white enamel twists formed by drawing and twisting glass canes before being incorporated into the stem.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the underside of the foot, wear consistent with age, subtle manufacturing imperfections such as tiny air bubbles, and specific historical stem formations.

Display such pieces within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving with adequate lighting, or as standalone decorative objects on sideboards to highlight their craftsmanship and clarity.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and never placing them in a dishwasher.
