Georgian longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originate from the 18th century and are characterised by tall wooden cases housing a pendulum and weight-driven mechanism, often featuring intricate woodwork and brass dials.

These clocks are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring hand-carved details, brass or silvered dial faces, and delicate inlay work executed by master cabinetmakers.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-beaten brass movements, natural timber ageing, and maker signatures inscribed on the dial face, though marriage clocks may combine movements and cases from slightly different periods.

Position the clock as a focal point in a hallway or living space to introduce verticality, warmth, and historic gravitas, contrasting its traditional timber grain against minimalist walls.

Keep the timber conditioned with suitable wax, avoid placement near direct heat sources or damp areas, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced and oiled every few years to ensure accurate timekeeping.
