Description

This is a Georgian, English, engraved, double series opaque twist stem wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with an informal floral border under the rim and sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of five white enamel "cotton" strands wound around a central twist of two white enamel cords. The stem leads to a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 13.8 cm (5.5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker to the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Georgian opaque twist glasses feature white or coloured enamel glass twists enclosed within a clear lead glass stem, popular during the mid to late 18th century.

These pieces were crafted using lead glass, often referred to as flint glass, combined with enamel glass rods inside the stem to create the characteristic opaque twist patterns.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit surface wear beneath the foot, pontil marks indicating hand-blowing, tiny air bubbles within the lead metal, and characteristic weight consistent with 18th-century manufacturing methods.

Antique stemware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used as accent pieces on a bar cart, or styled on a dining table to add historical texture and refined detail to contemporary interiors.

Wash antique glass by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and never placing fragile historical items in a dishwasher.
