FAQs

Marquetry involves applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, a technique that reached a high level of refinement in 18th-century French and English cabinet making.

These pieces typically combine a sturdy softwood or hardwood carcass with finely sliced contrasting timber veneers, secured with traditional animal glue and finished with hand-applied French polish.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneers with slight irregularities, natural timber ageing beneath the finish, and hand-cut dovetail joints within the drawer construction.

They serve as functional accent pieces that introduce warmth, texture, and historical contrast when paired with clean-lined modern upholstery and minimalist lighting.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without using silicone-based polishes.
