A skeleton clock is a timepiece designed with open plates and bridges to expose the intricate gear train and mechanical movement, typically housed under a protective glass dome.

They traditionally feature brass or gilt-bronze gear trains, silvered metal dials with Roman numerals, ebony or mahogany wooden bases, and blown glass domes.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut wheel teeth, blued steel hands, matching serial numbers on the movement and base, and minor signs of age-related wear on the brass components.

Position it on a prominent surface such as a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table where the exposed mechanics can catch the light and serve as a focal point.

Keep the clock out of direct sunlight, avoid placing it near drafts, handle the glass dome with care, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
