Carriage clocks originated in France during the 19th century as portable timepieces designed for travellers, officers, and the wealthy to carry during journeys.

These clocks traditionally feature heavy cast brass or gilded bronze frames fitted with bevelled glass panels to allow visibility of the intricate mechanical movement inside.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-engraved platform escapements, numbered mechanical movements, original key-wind arbours, and minor signs of age-appropriate wear on the metal components.

Place the clock as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table to add a touch of metallic sheen and traditional craftsmanship to contemporary or classic spaces.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and damp environments, wind it carefully at regular intervals, and have the internal mechanism professionally serviced every few years to ensure accurate timekeeping.
