Burr walnut refers to the rare, highly figured grain obtained from the wart-like growths on walnut trees. It was especially popular during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods, and later saw a major revival in Victorian craftsmanship.

These pieces typically feature fine burr walnut veneers applied to a secondary structural softwood or oak carcass. Traditional construction involves hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and the use of brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authenticity is indicated by natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut dovetails, older secondary woods inside the drawers, and subtle variations in the grain pattern of the hand-applied veneer rather than uniform modern printing.

Its rich, figured wood grain pairs exceptionally well with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary art to create a striking contrast between old and new.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying out or lifting. Apply a quality natural beeswax periodically to nourish the timber and maintain a soft lustre.
