Description

This is a Georgian, English short double series opaque twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is "hammer"-moulded to the lower half and is engraved with a trailing, fruiting vine to the upper half. The bowl sits on a scarce double series opaque twist stem consisting of a thick white enamel cord within a twisted gauze; an unusual twist formation. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.6 cm (3 inches) in diameter and which has a reassuring small shear mark to the edge. The glass is 13.7 cm (5.5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an unburst bubble in the metal of the foot dating from manufacture. There is an old collector's sticker on the underside of the foot.

Lead glass weighing in at 160 g. (~ 6 oz.).

An opaque twist wine glass is a type of drinking vessel produced in Britain during the 18th century, characterised by white or coloured enamel glass threads enclosed within a clear glass stem.

These glasses were hand-blown using lead glass, with internal twists formed by drawing and twisting canes of opaque white enamel glass within the stem structure.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface wear consistent with age, variations inherent to hand-blowing, and specific stem formations characteristic of 18th-century manufacturing methods.

Such pieces are frequently displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving, or utilised as refined decorative accents on sideboard tops to highlight historical craftsmanship.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding abrasive materials, extreme temperature changes, and dishwashers.
