This pair of late nineteenth century Dutch Delftware vases displays a classic baluster form crafted from ceramic earthenware with a white glaze and blue hand-painted decoration. Each vessel incorporates a distinctive garlic bulb neck, scrollwork borders, and a flared foot, complemented by intricate motifs featuring floral cartouches showing flowers in a pot, alongside foliate detailing and decorative neck mouldings. The glossy finish highlights the rich cobalt blue pigment against the bright white ceramic body, while the balanced proportions create a striking symmetry suited to traditional interiors. Measuring 40 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 29 cm deep, these substantial display pieces provide a commanding presence on a mantelpiece or side table in an English Country House setting. They work well paired together on a living room console or dining sideboard, bringing heritage charm and classical colour contrast to surface displays in a home today.

Delftware originated in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century, developed by Dutch potters seeking to emulate imported Chinese porcelain using local earthenware and tin-glazing techniques decorated with cobalt blue.

Traditional Delftware is made from earthenware clay covered with an opaque white tin glaze and painted with metal oxide pigments, primarily cobalt oxide for the blue coloration, before undergoing a firing process.

Authentic pieces typically display reddish or yellowish clay body visible at unglazed foot rims, tin-glaze crazing, soft painted brushwork, and historical maker marks or monograms on the underside.

These vases can be arranged in pairs on a mantelpiece, placed as a dining table centerpiece, or integrated into a gallery shelf display alongside neutral contemporary decor to create visual contrast.

Clean tin-glazed ceramic surface dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid immersing porous earthenware in water, and keep clear of abrasive chemical cleaners that could damage the glaze.
