The dial is signed with the maker 'JOYCE WHITCHURCH' who are a renowned family of Shropshire clockmakers. J. B. Joyce & Co, clockmakers, were founded in Shropshire in England. The company claim to be the oldest clock manufacturer in the world, originally established in 1690, and have made some famous clocks including the Eastgate clock in Chester, The Chester Cathedral clock, Liverpool Lime Street clock and many more.

The case is made from wonderful SOLID mahogany which has some superb grain and is a wonderful colour. The case has a wonderful patina which can only be gained through age. The door to the base of the clock is complete with its lock and key.

A fusee clock uses a conical pulley connected to a cord or chain to maintain an even tension on the mainspring as it unwinds, ensuring accurate timekeeping. This mechanism was widely used in British clockmaking from the 18th century through the Victorian era.

These clocks typically feature solid mahogany or oak cases with turned wooden bezels, housing heavy brass fusee movements behind painted iron or wooden dials.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-engraved backplates, tapered fusee chains rather than modern springs, high-quality timber grain in the case construction, and often the makers signature inscribed on the dial or movement.

Mount the clock at eye level on a prominent neutral wall, allowing its traditional timber tones and classic dial to serve as a focal point in a study, hallway, or living room.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, moisture, and temperature fluctuations, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced and oiled every three to five years.
