FAQs

French bedside cabinets, often referred to as commodes or night lockers, evolved during the 18th century from small enclosed tables designed to hold chamber pots or personal items in elite bedchambers.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative flourishes, and occasionally marble tops.

Authenticity is identified by period-appropriate joinery methods, handmade hardware, hand-carved wood details rather than cast resin, and signs of age such as timber shrinkage and historical oxidisation on metal fittings.

These cabinets add character and practical bedside storage to contemporary bedrooms, pairing effectively with minimalist decor, crisp linens, and modern metallic lighting to create a balanced eclectic aesthetic.

Maintain painted furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, and using coasters to protect surfaces from moisture.
