A matching pair of French Provincial bedside cabinets from 1920 provide a practical surface and enclosed storage for a bedroom. Made from oak with a warm brown timber finish, the cabinets incorporate inset beige marble tops with visible natural veining, brass drop pulls, and small brass keyhole escutcheons. Each cabinet includes a single frieze drawer above a cupboard door featuring a carved fielded panel with a central foliate motif. The side panels show vertical planking, and the storage sections are fitted with oak linings. Slender cabriole legs support the structure, terminating in swept feet. The cabinets stand 86 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. These cabinets suit placement beside a bed in a guest room or master suite to hold reading lamps, books, and nighttime essentials within easy reach while adding traditional character to the interior scheme.

FAQs

French Provincial bedside cabinets, often referred to as tables de chevet, feature regional interpretations of Parisian styles such as Louis XV. They typically incorporate cabriole legs, subtle floral wood carvings, shaped aprons, and fitted marble tops designed for practical bedroom utility.

These pieces were commonly constructed using solid regional hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood. Tops were frequently fitted with thick slabs of local marble, while drawer handles and door latches were crafted from cast brass or bronze.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, subtle hand-carved relief details, and natural wear around handles and feet. The undersides and back panels often show hand-sawn timber marks and traditional wooden peg joinery.

Pairing carved oak cabinets with clean-lined contemporary lighting and neutral woven linens creates a balanced visual contrast. The warm timber tones and marble surfaces add natural texture to minimal or transitional bedroom schemes.

Clean the marble surface with a damp cloth and mild, pH-neutral soap, taking care to wipe away spills immediately to prevent acidic etching. Apply natural beeswax polish to the oak woodwork periodically along the grain to maintain timber hydration.
