Description

A pretty little early 19th Cent Longcase clock of nice small size.

The case is in nicely figured solid mahogany.

The good quality 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a decorative painted dial with subsidiary seconds dial and date indicator. To the arch is a dial displaying the phases of the moon.

The case is in good unrestored condition and has retained its original finish. It does however have marks and knocks associated with age and use. There are a couple of chips to the trunk door and the glass in the little windows on the sides of the hood are cracked.

The movement is in good working order and keeping good time.

Free local delivery and set-up (60mls), national delivery arranged at cost.

Date of Manufacture

Cross Antiques has dated this Antique Longcase Clock to the 19th Century.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock enclosed in a wooden case with a pendulum and weight-driven movement typically extending the full length of the body.

These clocks are traditionally constructed using a timber carcass, frequently faced with veneers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, and feature brass or painted iron dials protected by glass.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-painted or engraved metal dials, period-appropriate mechanical movements, hand-cut joinery within the wooden case, and natural ageing consistent with nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

An antique longcase clock functions as a strong architectural anchor in a contemporary space, pairing effectively with minimalist walls to highlight its traditional craftsmanship and timber tones.

Preservation involves placing the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources, keeping the mechanical movement professionally serviced and oiled every few years, and ensuring the case sits level on the floor.
