An 18th century Georgian dark brown oak coffer exemplifies traditional rustic farmhouse design, constructed with pegged joints, a flat hinged plank lid, and framed panel construction. The timber exhibits a striking grain and aged patina with a waxed finish, complemented by visible signs of genuine old repairs and a dark iron keyhole escutcheon on the upper rail. Two large lozenge carved panels dominate the front elevation, surrounded by moulded framing and set above stile feet, while the upper section incorporates narrow recessed panels. The coffer measures 73 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, providing substantial storage capacity. Such a piece sits appropriately in a hallway, bedroom, or living space to store blankets and linens while adding historical character to an interior.

An 18th-century oak coffer is a wooden storage chest typically constructed with framed panel sides and a hinged lid, widely used in historic homes for storing linens, textiles, and household valuables.

Traditional coffers were crafted from solid English oak utilising mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden dowels or pegs, often featuring carved front panels and wrought iron hinges.

Authentic 18th-century coffers exhibit signs of age such as hand-planed interior surfaces, original peg joinery, natural shrinkage gaps across timber panels, and a rich, aged patina from historical wax polish.

An antique oak coffer can be incorporated as a functional hallway storage bench, placed at the foot of a bed for extra linen, or styled as a central low coffee table in a contemporary living space.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers lustre.
