FAQs

French bedside cabinets, often referred to as tables de chevet, gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries. The integration of marble tops provided a durable, water-resistant surface for holding water pitchers and washbasins before indoor plumbing was commonplace.

These cabinets are traditionally constructed using solid oak or oak veneers over secondary woods, joined with traditional joinery such as dovetails for drawers. The tops feature fitted slabs of natural marble, often white with grey veining, and are typically accented with cast brass or bronze hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional hand-carved details appropriate to the era, and natural patination on the wood and metal hardware. The marble top should be a heavy, single fitted slab rather than a lightweight composite or modern laminate.

These versatile pieces serve well as functional nightstands in a modern bedroom, contrasting clean lines with traditional craftsmanship. They can also be repurposed as compact side tables in a living room or hallway to add texture and historical character.

Oak wood should be dusted regularly with a dry cloth and treated occasionally with appropriate natural wax to nourish the grain. Marble is porous and susceptible to acid staining, so coasters should always be used, and spills should be cleaned immediately with a pH-neutral cleaner.
