FAQs

A cartel clock is an ornamental wall-mounted clock housed in an elaborately sculpted case made of materials like gilt bronze, brass, or wood, which originated in France during the late 17th century.

These clocks typically feature cases made from cast bronze treated with mercury gilding, known as ormolu, fitted with enamel dial plates and brass mechanical clockwork movements.

Authenticity is determined by examining the quality of hand-chasing on the bronze, the construction of the brass movement, serial numbers, and the presence of period-appropriate wear and patination.

An antique wall clock serves as a focal point when mounted against a simple, neutral wall, contrasting historical craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist architectural elements.

Gilt bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents, abrasive polishes, or excessive handling that can damage the delicate gilded surface.
