Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian bookcase stands as a compact display piece made from burr walnut with a warm brown timber finish and intricate floral marquetry inlay across the frieze and vertical stiles. The single arched glazed door features detailed brass and ormolu mounts, including figural caryatids at the upper corners, decorative corner appliques below, and a functioning key within an escutcheon. Inside, two fixed wooden shelves sit behind the glass panel, complemented by cast metal edgings along the top and base mouldings and a central mount on the plinth drawer. It measures 105 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a study, drawing room, or hallway, this cabinet serves as practical storage for small book collections, ceramics, or decorative objects. The glazed front allows items to remain visible while protected from dust, while the slim proportions suit alcoves or compact wall spaces in contemporary interiors.

Victorian pier cabinets and low glazed bookcases originated in nineteenth-century Britain, initially designed to stand on the narrow wall spaces (piers) between tall windows. These cabinets typically feature a single or double glazed door, elaborate timber veneers, and gilt-bronze metal accents.

Cabinetmakers during the mid-to-late Victorian era commonly used solid pine or mahogany frames veneered with figured burr walnut. Decorative details featured boxwood or fruitwood marquetry inlays alongside cast brass or bronze mounts, known as ormolu.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer linings, original blown or floated glass panels showing slight visual distortions, and hand-chased metal mounts with natural surface oxidisation on the reverse.

A Victorian glazed bookcase serves as a focal piece in a modern hallway, living room, or study when styled with curated art books, ceramics, or sculptural objects. The dark wood and metallic accents contrast effectively against neutral or dark moody wall tones.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish annually along the grain. Metal mounts should be kept free from moisture and chemical polishers, which strip the historical patina.
